Go The Distance: A Twisted Tale – Jen Calonita
Retellings, Hercules, Megara, gods, goddesses, young adult, fiction.
Megara and Hercules go to Mount Olympus together after he defeats the Titans and rescues her from the River of Souls. As he has a family reunion she doubts that she would be welcomed up here. Zeus tells Hercules he can’t go back to earth and he has to stay up on Mount Olympus. However, Hera makes an offer to Megara that if she can retrieve Athena’s double flute that she would give more and further instructions to help her become a God. Megara, wanting to be with Hercules, agrees. She goes and manages to retrieve the flute and Phil plus Pegasus helped her along the way. Now she has to make a choice of going to save her ex-boyfriend’s wife from the Underworld or never be able to be at Hercules’ side. Her heart and guts guide her to the right choice she must make and the trials she must face to gain Godhood.
The moment that this book was announced and was available for preorder I had to get it. I love Hercules and Meg from the Disney movie. They were so adorably cute and in this one they are still adorable and cute. I loved this book because there was an intriguing plot and purpose for Megara that she also learned about herself along the way. As well as what truly happened about her ex-boyfriend and how Hades deceived and lied to Megara. The bad person there was Hades for being a manipulative God. Every time I read any parts that had Phil talking, I read it with Danny DeVito’s voice which was ironically funny. I hope if they should come out with a sequel to Hercules, Disney should use this book because it’s an excellent idea. The writing is phenomenal and feels really immersive as well. I HIGHLY recommend going and getting this book to read.
Conceal, Don’t Feel – Jen Calonita
Frozen, twisted tales, young adult, fiction.
Elsa is an only child of Arendelle, and Anna is adopted. Elsa overhears her parents talk about magic and curses. Anna’s parents want to tell her the truth. Later, Elsa becomes queen due to her parents never surviving the trip back. The entire kingdom is in mourning whereas Elsa becomes curious about the A initial in the storage area. Elsa finds out she has a sibling through fragmented memories and the kingdom has a curse. Elsa is determined to find her sister and break the curse.
I am not a fan of anything affiliated with the fandom of Frozen nor the movie. However this book was an exception because it had no singing obviously. This novel had great writing and the author was excellent at keeping with the lore. Calonita made it twisty and that twisty made it interesting. If one is a Frozen fan might enjoy this book more than I had enjoyed. The writing was so excellent and well thought into. This book could’ve been a bit longer but then I wouldn’t be able to cope because as I mentioned before. I wasn’t a fan of this princess nor the surrounding that is this particular princess fandom. True Frozen fans would love this novel more. Just saying with respect.
So This is Love – Elizabeth Lim
Cinderella, twisted tales, young adult, fiction.
Cinderella had to flee before midnight because her dress and all the magic is what was able to allow her to be incognito for the most part and attend the ball. The prince, Charles, has a glass slipper and made it a royal decree that all eligible women should try on the glass slipper. When the grand duke is at Cinderella’s house, she is unable to get downstairs fast enough due to her stepmother locking her up because she found out the truth. After the visit from the grand duke, Lady Tremaine attempts to sell Cinderella off seas but Cinderella manages to escape. She meets with Louisa who works at the palace and her aunt is able to give Cinderella a job attending to the king’s sister who is just visiting a while. The King’s sister Genevieve closely bonds with Cinderella and the grand duke sees this and manipulates Cinderella into being a spy but Cinderella doesn’t want that. Genevieve talks her brother into holding another ball and Cinderella has another shot at her happy ending. There becomes a roadblock between her and the prince, it is the conspiracy that is going on inside the castle and Cinderella is in the middle of it.
I was interested in the synopsis and bought the novel on impulse. I don’t regret it. I love this novel and I really liked the little suspense of the novel. I prefer this version over the Disney movie because it made more sense and the plot was more intriguing. The writing was excellent, and I loved how the author kept true with some of the characters personalities such as Lady Tremaine and the stepsisters. However the grand duke being a bad guy was a twist I didn’t expect. I do recommend this novel for sure if one is a fan of Cinderella. She wasn’t my top favorite, but I liked her over some of the classic princesses. She wasn’t as annoying in other words.
