this was eerily chilling read…

Mother May I – Joshilyn Jackson

Mystery, thriller, fiction.

Rating 7/10

An old battered woman was standing outside of Bree’s window looking in. Bree thought she was seeing stuff but her husband also saw. Next thing she knows is that her son was taken and gets a mysterious phone call. She is given instructions to roofie Spencer at a party or else she won’t see her son. She’s also warned to never involve her husband nor the police. Bree does that precisely and after doing the deed, the Mother gives her another instruction. In order to get her son back she must trade her husband. Bree asks the help of her best friend and former cop to assist her with getting her son back. While throughout this cat and mouse chase, Bree realized that the man whom she married and had three kids with was not who she thought this man was.

This was a little haunting and chilling. I was expecting more but it was not a lot of thrill. Just a mild thrill and mystery. However, it was nothing that I’ve read before. I hadn’t expected the book to go in a certain route. This novel goes over the crucial topic of college parties and how some women get raped due to them being all drugged up. When a woman is not sober she can’t give consent and that is what happened here in the novel. Consent should be between two sober adults. Bree’s reaction to her husband’s past was perfectly normal that she wanted him to make things right with the woman whom he had taken advantage of and ruined her for life. What was uncalled for was the kidnapping of a newborn child. This novel was a little hard to read towards the end and overall the writing was great.

didn’t expect this novel to be utterly good

The Girl Who Could Move Shit With Her Mind – Jackson Ford

Science fiction, mystery, thriller, fiction.

Rating 11/10

Teagan has telekinetic powers and she is the only one to have them. Due to this, she is working for the government as a trade off from having doctors and scientists cut her open to do testing to see about her powers. Until someone was found dead in a particular way that makes her look like the murderer. She has only twenty four hours before clearing her own name. If she doesn’t find the murderer she will be trialed and sent to a lab facility. She would be erased from any records. Someone else in town has the same powers as she does. She hunts them down to confront them and bring them to light of justice.

I got this mostly because of the title and the synopsis. This was utterly weird and I couldn’t believe that this book is hardly popular yet there are sequels so someone had to be reading it. I found myself laughing throughout this and intrigued with her perspective. I found myself reading this to the point where I lost track of time. I had such a fun time reading this novel and I might end up getting the sequels as well. This novel will take readers on a mystery thriller with a lot of science fiction involved. I also love where the novel takes place, which is Los Angeles. The descriptions of certain places, especially Skid Row, are vivid and really authentic. Other places described are rather realistic. The author must have been from Los Angeles to know the ultra specific areas and how they look. I enjoyed that in this book. I can’t wait to read more. I highly recommend this novel.

the finale… im crying

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Last Olympian – Rick Riordan

Children’s fiction, Greek gods, fantasy, demigods, gods, goddesses, fiction.

Rating 10/10

Percy gathers his allies and many forces to fight in this battle against Kronos. Also, he forges some new allies along the way. Percy and his friends take a final stand against Kronos before the revengeful titan destroys Mount Olympus.

This book was very action packed and that is why I did the review so short because there are mostly fighting and action. However, I loved how this was the perfect end of the series. Usually, series are left unsatisfied or I was sad that it ended. This book was the exception. I heard from one of my friends that this is to become a Disney series and I am convinced that it should be. This series was so good. The writing was phenomenal and amazingly put together. The pacing is perfect and there is a lot of interesting chapters and scenes that made me laugh. I do recommend the series.

an epic maze…

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Battle of the Labyrinth – Rick Riordan

Children’s fiction, Greek gods, fantasy, demigods, gods, goddesses, fiction.

Rating 8/10

Percy must go into the Labyrinth to do a mission with Annabeth, Tyson, and Grover. In hopes of preventing an all-out war between the Titan Kronos and the Gods and Goddesses, they must find the inventor to turn him onto their side. They get split up into two and race against time to prevent the war. Percy discovers some new powers that aid him. Nico is the focus of trying to turn him away from joining Kronos. Percy tries to tell him that his sister’s death was not his fault and she died heroically. When Nico soon discovers he feels sorry that he almost made a terrible mistake. The crew reforms with Nico and a human on their side, they all shockingly discover that Luke is long gone and now Kronos is reformed. The war begins.

I liked this part because there were more interesting events going on. There was so much lore packed into this one and I loved every single minute of reading this. I feel bad for Annabeth because she loved Luke, but he turned traitor. It is heartbreaking but I think she can do better honestly. All in all, cannot wait to read the final installment but I feel I do not want to read it because that means the end of a series. Either way I must read on otherwise it would be simply delaying the inevitable.

woah just woah

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Titan’s Curse – Rick Riordan

Children’s fiction, Greek gods, fantasy, demigods, gods, goddesses, fiction.

Rating 9/10

Grover contacts Percy, Annabeth, and Thalia to come to a boarding school for help. There are two half-bloods that arrived, and Grover does not know who their parentage is. The trio arrive and must help get the two half-bloods, Bianca, and Nico de Angelo, out of the boarding school and into Camp Half-Blood. They nearly escape the clutches of a monster that is working for Kronos with the help of Artemis and her Huntresses. Annabeth is missing now, and they must go back to Camp Half Blood to request a mission. Artemis goes on a solo mission to hunt the monster that took Annabeth. The oracle tells the prophecy that Thalia, Percy, and a few others must go to San Francisco where they will find Annabeth and Artemis from danger.

I found this one to be very funny because of the interactions of the characters. Just the dialogue that is utterly hilarious. I found myself favoriting the newest character, Thalia, who is the daughter of Zeus. There is even more Greek lore flushed out as well as some other gods and goddesses being introduced. I am glad for the breadcrumbs of information because it does not overwhelm the plot nor forces anything onto the reader to take it all in at once. I do not like how other authors push it all at once in one go. I like to learn about the world slowly as the plot progresses. I think I read this book faster than the previous book because of how intriguing it is and now have my eyes set on the fourth book that is sitting on my shelf. Cannot wait to read it. The pacing is perfect.

a different type of Sea

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters – Rick Riordan

Children’s fiction, Greek gods, fantasy, demigods, gods, goddesses, fiction.

Rating 8/10

A year passes by and Percy is excited to attend another summer camp at Camp Half Blood. His mother tells him a cryptic message saying there is something he should know. Not even before the end of the school day, Annabeth arrives and informs Percy that there is trouble at the camp. He brings along a friend who is a baby cyclops named Tyson. They arrive at the Camp Half Blood and learn that the camp is in danger. Meaning that the haven for half-bloods is no longer safe. Percy gets cryptic messages from Grover in his dreams to come save him as well as get the item that is on the cyclops island that will heal the tree that was poisoned. Percy and Annabeth along with Tyson go on a perilous journey into the Sea of Monsters to save camp.

This was just as interestingly action packed as the first but a little short. We see more lore and mythology flushed out as the plot thickens. The characters develop more and their interactions as well. I do not like a novel that flushes out the lore of the world in one book, I like the breadcrumb method. What I love the most is that the Greek lore is adapted to the modern age and makes the literature more fun to read than the older classic literature such as the epic of The Iliad and the Odyssey. I feel this is more authentic telling with a modern twist so that it is not a snooze fest. I have yet found the Percy and Annabeth pairing interesting past friendship so far. So please bear with me as I still do not ship any character with anyone else. Sorry I do not think that Percy and Annabeth can be ship material unfortunately. Maybe this will be a first series that I do not ship anyone. Anyways, I found this entertaining as well. I cannot wait to read the next book.

the MC has ADHD?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief – Rick Riordan

Children’s fiction, Greek gods, fantasy, demigods, gods, goddesses, fiction.

Rating 9/10

Percy is on an ordinary field trip to a museum when something strange happens. He came across this being that tried to kill him. Grover, a satyr, warns Percy of danger. Percy and his mother try to escape before a Centaur attacked. Percy had to find safety and finds himself at Camp Half-Blood. The place is a haven for demi-gods to learn and be themselves. He meets other camp members and including Annabeth. Annabeth helped him get accustomed to the change and understanding of what is going on with his life. He does not understand that he is a demi-god until it is revealed that he is the son of Poseidon. Percy has a mission he must retrieve Zeus’s lightning bolt or deal with the horrid consequences. Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, accompanies him with the journey as well as Glover. He decides to retrieve Zeus’s lightning bolt, fighting monsters and gods along the way to find out who stole the lightning bolt.

My friend had recommended me the book series since they are to be turned into a Disney+ original series or something to that nature. I bought the entire boxed set and decided to take a chance on the series. I am so glad and mad at myself for not getting into this series. I love Greek mythology, and if you know me in person, I make the joke about mythology being shortened down if it was Zeus and the other gods and goddesses decided to keep it in their pants. Overall, I really loved the writing and the characters. Some of them, especially the main character, who has ADHD is relatable. I cannot wait to read the next book of the series so otherwise I am thankful for having access to the series. There were a few characters I had liked until they were not likeable. I do not unfortunately ship anyone so do not ask me about the whole Annabeth and Percy ship. It is only the first book and it has yet to be determined. So far, I see them as friends, do not attack me. Anyways I do love the first book and very much looking forward to the next book of the series.
