We Are All The Same in the Dark – Julia Heaberlin
Mystery, thriller, fiction.
Odette is called to Wyatt’s house because of some suspicious activity. Wyatt shows her the young teenage girl he picked up who was surrounded by dandelions. The young girl has no eye and is mute. Odette thinks that this young girl is connected to the Trumanell Branson disappearance that happened a decade ago. Both cases are going to be tough as Odette’s past comes creeping up and she tries to solve the mysterious disappearance of Tru as well as the appearance of this young woman.
This novel was thrilling and kept me on my toes throughout the novel. I couldn’t stop reading and wanting to know what happened to Trumanell Branson. I was trying to predict what had happened to the young woman too. The novel was very mysterious until the very end. There was a lot of emotion built up and I loved every moment of the novel. I was disappointed by the ending. Overall the writing causes the reader to be invested by the plot and narrative from the first to the last page. I prefer this as a moderate thrill novel because there are some intense scenes but it’s nothing too drastic. A perfect novel for halloween for sure.
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein- Kiersten White
Characters in literature, monsters, scientists, murder, Frankenstein, young adult, fiction.
Elizabeth was orphaned at birth and was a great burden for her caregiver. Later on her caregiver hands her off into the Frankenstien household as Victor’s companion. She grew close to him and he grew close to her. After the death of his mother, he goes to university for a few years to resume further studies. When he doesn’t make contact Elizabeth for a few months becomes worried. She goes to find him herself and tries to make sense as to what happened. When she arrives, she finds him feverish and looks around his residence to find him collecting odd body parts. She worries for his mental state. He confesses to her that he failed and she should go back home and he would soon follow after he cleans up to start his research anew. A while after returning home, someone was found murdered and everyone is pointing fingers. Elizabeth finds the truth of who is the murderer and the murderer is Victor’s creation.
I had been a fan of the Frankenstein novel by Mary Shelley who created science fiction because of a dare. That was a good book and I wished there was more to it. I found this novel that was about Elizabeth. This novel was great at doing the perspective of Elizabeth and the execution felt very science fiction with the side benefit of a thrill. The writing was excellent. The characters remained faithful to the original plot. I loved this novel but wished that this was longer but given it was only about Elizabeth only sort of was the downside. Either way I loved this novel and I do recommend this novel. This novel is more of a one sitting type of read honestly.
A Curse So Dark and Lonely – Brigid Kemmerer
Blessings, curses, magic, cerebral palsy, disabilities, fiction.
Rhen is cursed to repeat the winter of his eighteenth birthday, by the end of the season he turns into a monster. Grey, his commander to the prince, goes out to find a woman to break the curse. Harper is a girl who endures cerebral palsy does whatever she can to help her mother who has cancer and help her brother pay off debt to bad people. When she witnesses a man about to take a woman she steps in and gets caught in the mess. She is taken with the man to this other realm. She meets Grey and Rhen and hears of the curse as well as how bad off this kingdom is. The enchantress offers Rhen a deal he cannot refuse, and he accepts his fate. Harper quickly learns to adapt and accept a role to help out as much as she can. When the enchantress comes back to tell her news of her family and she begs to be taken back home. She fixes her life and said her final goodbye to her mother. Grey returns injured and needs her help saving Rhen from the curse and the kingdom. Harper returns in hopes of saving Rhen and his kingdom.
This novel felt like a more bad ass version of Beauty and the Beast but very different though. I love how the author created a character who has cerebral palsy who is strong and determined. I hardly ever find stories that depict different-abled people in a positive light, meaning like its not a pity me story, but a narrative of being a fighter and a strong-willed determination. A way to see different-abled persons in a more positive light than people perceive them. Just because they do not have what society considers functional, they are still functional in other ways and calling them disabled has such a negative connotation. Cerebral palsy effects each individual different than others and each person is capable of being strong willed and resilient. I highly recommend giving this book a read. I really loved this novel a lot. I did not put it down at all. Every time that I did, I found myself becoming sad and wanting to read more.
Dark Matter – Blake Crouch
Thriller, horror, mystery, science fiction.
Jason lives a happy life with his lovely wife and his teenager. One-night changes his life entirely as he is kidnapped and drugged. When he comes back alive, he realizes that everything he had is gone. His wife isn’t his wife, their kid doesn’t exist, and he is a major scientist. No one believes in his story. They all see him as a threat and chase after him for answers. He learns that he is in another dimension of reality. He must jump into various dimensions to hopefully find his own dimension before his world ends.
I love the mix of science fiction, horror, mystery, and thriller that this small book has to offer. Its compacted a lot of action and science fiction. Never a dull moment inside this novel. This plot becomes weird but makes sense with all the science theories involved. I wish this was longer, but I prefer a hasty cliff hanger for now. I do recommend this novel for those who are looking for some crazy science fiction horror thriller.
Kingdom Keepers 1: Disney After Dark –
Disney, Disney World, children,
There is a darkness that threatens both
the Disney World park and the world. An old park attendant, Wayne, warns Finn
of this news and warns him to gather the other teenagers in this fight. At
first, Finn thought that the encounter was false and only a dream, but the
truth revealed and Finn wants to act immediately. Finn gathers four other
teenagers must use certain technology to go up against Disney Villains as well
as witches. This is all good versus evil to save the park and the world. Finn
and the other teenagers must save the world.
I had grabbed this children’s novel
while at California Adventure because the idea of being trapped at a theme park
battling Disney Villains had deeply intrigued me. I did not care that this
novel was short or meant for a younger (children) audience. I enjoyed reading
this so much that I couldn’t put the book down. Later I found out this was a
continuing series and I intend on reading the rest soon. I recommend this novel
for sure for anyone young at heart and are a Disney fanatic.
